Fountains, and the Sound of Water

There are many ways to make a garden become a refuge. Built in to the very notion of a garden is the idea that it’s become a space reserved for communing with a small version of nature. Water is at the source of all things that grow, and fountains are a way of bringing this to the center.

For all of the soothing potentials of water, and the way it can affect each of the senses, the one that’s perhaps the most important is sound. In terms of the garden fountain, the subtle affects of the sound of running water have a way of taking the mind toward a relaxing place where the source of life is like a lullaby to busy thoughts.

Water does affect the other senses in profound ways. Even untreated water has a very specific smell, evoking the same memories that take the body back to the original ocean. The visual aspects are also quite pleasing, reflecting light, and capturing color as if it were a perfect twin to its surroundings. It is always soothing to the touch, and holds a fascinating for small children that never really goes away. The taste is simple, but one of nourishment, reminding the body that it is composed of water. Sound brings all of these together as a reminder of where one is in the world.

The Semantics of Clouds

It is a difficult thing to get into the world of contemporary computer technologies. Like any new system that holds the potential for being inclusive and radically independent, the first stages of its growth is often accompanied by what many new users perceive to be difficult language. It’s a complication that arises in anything new and possibly transformational. It’s also something of a criticism that’s often leveled at philosophers and academics as they begin developing new theories of how things are, or how things seem to be.

It’s not a new development, although it certainly seems to be. New concepts, new structures, and new ways of thinking do require a new language. In the early 1960s, when post-structural philosophy was making waves in Europe, the intellectuals were vastly excited, and the students were either taken in by the wave, or else left terribly confused. In that particular context, the thinkers of the time were responding to the notion that language had suddenly become a tool not of revelation or communication, but of intentional obfuscation .

That’s not the case today, although a first look at computer language might suggest otherwise. With a bit of time, however, it becomes easier to understand, and is actually as user-friendly as the programs have become. The metaphors are embedded in the names, so that cloudshare refers to the interconnected networks in a company, but also create a visual picture of clouds in the sky, separate but moving along the same air flows. These metaphors are the very key to understanding the systems.

International Business Training for Managers

Identifying employees with the potential as an international manager and who is able and willing to take on the international assignment, appropriate business training should become an integral part of the process. The business training should include advanced management skills and numerous briefings covering the details of the political, historical, social, economical and business environment of the country they will be either moving to or traveling to with extended stays. Also, the business training should encompass cross-cultural awareness in order for the new international manager to appreciate the beliefs, values and practices of the country and how their own culture is seen by the people they will be encountering.

Language training is also very important and should not be left as a last minute task. Fluidity in the language of the country they will be managing will give them the vocabulary skills necessary to communicate effectively not only with the employees, but with the company’s clients and customers. Going abroad with only a rudimentary understanding of the language can lead to loss of good employees, a drop in customers and profits.

A key strategic imperative in managing an international business is effectively training the international managers. Managers who have the knowledge, skills, motivation, experience, great people skills, leadership skills and cultural sensitivity will allow them to create and sustain a competitive advantage. Business training needs to be all inclusive, meaning it takes time and patience to develop a great international manager, but it will be time well worth the investment.

Auto Repairs and Breaking Down

Imagine driving back from a trip to Las Vegas through the Mojave Desert , and your check engine light comes on, or your air conditioner or your alternator stops working. The check engine light might just be an electrical problem or a warning about something worse. No air conditioning in a desert is certainly a problem, but no alternator is an even greater one. Without it, you’re hoping you have a cell phone that receives a signal, because you may not be traveling again without a tow truck. If you don’t know anything about your car’s engines, you’ll be forced to trust whatever mechanic you can find. However, with a little preparation before your trip, you can learn a few things about auto repair .

Basic automotive repair information may be found online, and will give you a fighting chance to know what an unknown mechanic is talking about. Familiarity with how an engine works, and, more specifically, how the engine of your particular car works, is crucial in these situations. Reviewing repair manuals for your vehicle is one way to be prepared; you may not be able to fix the car yourself, but at least you’ll know what the mechanic is talking about, and whether or not the mechanic may be trusted.

Aside from packing your vehicle with water and food, knowing your car’s capabilities inside and out is the best defense against a breakdown — unless, of course, you win big in Las Vegas. In that case, you can always buy a new car when yours breaks down.

Pawn Shops and Curiosities

There’s a definite appeal about pawn shops that speaks to a kind of carnival spirit in everyone. On a very basic level, the idea of a place where one can Sell Gold has a very visceral appeal, and speaks to basic needs of people to feel secure having money in their pockets. At the same time, there’s also something of the mysterious and the unknown about them.

For some people, the idea of a pawn shop has a contemporary touch, where it’s a place where one can do easy on-line transactions that are beneficial to both parties. But the physical pawn shop often has the same mystique of the curio shop . Here, one can find very old items that have interest not based on economic value, but on their unusual nature. It’s like the vast second hand store in dreams, the kind of thing that Borges would write about. There’s also the idea that, one day, one will find a certain lost object from childhood, that will make a chaotic life into a perfect circle.

Imagine a store where a collector traveled the world looking for the most unusual things he could find. It becomes a kind of storehouse of culture, and it’s also a kind of ethereal notion that does carry over to pawn shops . One never knows what they’ll find, but they usually know what they’re hoping to sell.
